A far worse method is the use of anti skating bias tracks found on some test.

Anti skate affects the tracking ability of your stylus how well the needle is able to move across your records.
Due to the laws of physics the rotation of a vinyl record and friction with the stylus tip draws it slightly towards the inside of the groove.
See my notes at the end of this anti skating message for more details make sure that the anti skating is well set.
In the case of anti skate one signal is present for each of the channels.
How do you set the perfect anti skate force of your tonearm.
When you play this track both channels should sound clean and to the highest level.
When playing vinyl the tonearm moves from the outside of the disc to the inside.
Get it badly wrong and you risk having the stylus jumping around like a kid on a trampoline adding wear and tear on the grooves themselves.
Properly set and adjusted anti skating works very well to protect your records and needle and the shaft or cantilever that the needle is mounted on.
Get it right and the stylus runs through your vinyl grooves like a good un.

How to set anti skating.

Distortions and differences in intensity are signs of incorrect anti skate setup.
Using a blank record or the groove less area of the inner run out on a record to adjust anti skating so that the tonearm remains stationary is not a recommended method to adjust anti skating as it results in about 50 too much anti skating force applied.
Please note this will not agree or work with test records designed for higher amounts of anti skating.
